See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.

The faithful have been swept from the land; not one upright person remains. Everyone lies in wait to shed blood; they hunt each other with nets.

My whole being will exclaim, “Who is like you, Lord? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.”

The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.

Listen to the wail of the shepherds; their rich pastures are destroyed! Listen to the roar of the lions; the lush thicket of the Jordan is ruined!

With his own spear you pierced his head when his warriors stormed out to scatter us, gloating as though about to devour the wretched who were in hiding.

Does a lion roar in the thicket when it has no prey? Does it growl in its den when it has caught nothing?

The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery; they oppress the poor and needy and mistreat the foreigner, denying them justice.

Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding,

Scoundrels use wicked methods, they make up evil schemes to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just.

What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a helpless people.

One who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and one who gives gifts to the rich—both come to poverty.

Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

The arrogant have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path.

“Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the Lord. “I will protect them from those who malign them.”

Don’t give in to them, because more than forty of them are waiting in ambush for him. They have taken an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. They are ready now, waiting for your consent to their request.”

The wicked foe pulls all of them up with hooks, he catches them in his net, he gathers them up in his dragnet; and so he rejoices and is glad.

“Among my people are the wicked who lie in wait like men who snare birds and like those who set traps to catch people.

The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright.

For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them.

when they crouch in their dens or lie in wait in a thicket?
