Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.

When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”

Ahab said to Elijah, “So you have found me, my enemy!” “I have found you,” he answered, “because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord.

Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah went up and slapped Micaiah in the face. “Which way did the spirit from the Lord go when he went from me to speak to you?” he asked.

and say, ‘This is what the king says: Put this fellow in prison and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely.’ ”

But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy.

“Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.

A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.

Mockers resent correction, so they avoid the wise.

Do not speak to fools, for they will scorn your prudent words.

But the people remained silent and said nothing in reply, because the king had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
