The Lord then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.

A flood will carry off his house, rushing waters on the day of God’s wrath.

Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value, but righteousness delivers from death.

In the way of righteousness there is life; along that path is immortality.

For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.

What will you do on the day of reckoning, when disaster comes from afar? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your riches?

even if these three men—Noah, Daniel and Job—were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign Lord.

“ ‘They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean. Their silver and gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s wrath. It will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs, for it has caused them to stumble into sin.

Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath.” In the fire of his jealousy the whole earth will be consumed, for he will make a sudden end of all who live on the earth.

What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
