The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.

A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother.

To have a fool for a child brings grief; there is no joy for the parent of a godless fool.

A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the mother who bore him.

A foolish child is a father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like the constant dripping of a leaky roof.

These are more proverbs of Solomon, compiled by the men of Hezekiah king of Judah:

Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart; then I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt.

A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother.

Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.

A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.

Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.

And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless.
