let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—

While he was still speaking, the king said to him, “Have we appointed you an adviser to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped but said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”

“So listen to me, you men of understanding. Far be it from God to do evil, from the Almighty to do wrong.

“If you have understanding, hear this; listen to what I say.

“Hear my words, you wise men; listen to me, you men of learning.

“Men of understanding declare, wise men who hear me say to me,

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.

The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning.

The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.

Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke the discerning, and they will gain knowledge.

When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; by paying attention to the wise they get knowledge.

Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not disregard it.

Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you.

Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.

I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.

I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.

Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”
