In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.

The Lord is known by his acts of justice; the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands.

The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.

A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy brings healing.

I saw the tents of Cushan in distress, the dwellings of Midian in anguish.

Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message:

Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”

Then Balaam got up and returned home, and Balak went his own way.

And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.

They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”

“They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people.

The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.

They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness.

Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.

But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur.

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality.
