Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there.

So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt, taking with them their livestock and the possessions they had acquired in Canaan.

Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years.

And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”

We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.

Isn’t it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? And now you also want to lord it over us!

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying: “This is what your brother Israel says: You know about all the hardships that have come on us.

but when we cried out to the Lord, he heard our cry and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. “Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.

Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our ancestors died.

He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.

But the Egyptians mistreated us and made us suffer, subjecting us to harsh labor.
