The faithful have been swept from the land; not one upright person remains. Everyone lies in wait to shed blood; they hunt each other with nets.

Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.

Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts.

They spread a net for my feet— I was bowed down in distress. They dug a pit in my path— but they have fallen into it themselves.

If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul;

The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them.

People will oppress each other— man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the nobody against the honored.

The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil.

Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. They pursue evil schemes; acts of violence mark their ways.

By the wrath of the Lord Almighty the land will be scorched and the people will be fuel for the fire; they will not spare one another.

“But now I will send for many fishermen,” declares the Lord, “and they will catch them. After that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them down on every mountain and hill and from the crevices of the rocks.

Their quivers are like an open grave; all of them are mighty warriors.

“Among my people are the wicked who lie in wait like men who snare birds and like those who set traps to catch people.

I have listened attentively, but they do not say what is right. None of them repent of their wickedness, saying, “What have I done?” Each pursues their own course like a horse charging into battle.

People stalked us at every step, so we could not walk in our streets. Our end was near, our days were numbered, for our end had come.

In you are people who accept bribes to shed blood; you take interest and make a profit from the poor. You extort unjust gain from your neighbors. And you have forgotten me, declares the Sovereign Lord.

“ ‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “ ‘Woe to the city of bloodshed, to the pot now encrusted, whose deposit will not go away! Take the meat out piece by piece in whatever order it comes.

“Hear this, you priests! Pay attention, you Israelites! Listen, royal house! This judgment is against you: You have been a snare at Mizpah, a net spread out on Tabor.

As marauders lie in ambush for a victim, so do bands of priests; they murder on the road to Shechem, carrying out their wicked schemes.

Lately my people have risen up like an enemy. You strip off the rich robe from those who pass by without a care, like men returning from battle.

who build Zion with bloodshed, and Jerusalem with wickedness.

you who hate good and love evil; who tear the skin from my people and the flesh from their bones;

For I will no longer have pity on the people of the land,” declares the Lord. “I will give everyone into the hands of their neighbors and their king. They will devastate the land, and I will not rescue anyone from their hands.”

The other Jews joined in the accusation, asserting that these things were true.

See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life.

Now do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the Lord. The king of Israel has come out to look for a flea—as one hunts a partridge in the mountains.”
