My people, remember what Balak king of Moab plotted and what Balaam son of Beor answered. Remember your journey from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of the Lord.”

While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women,

the voice of the singers at the watering places. They recite the victories of the Lord, the victories of his villagers in Israel. “Then the people of the Lord went down to the city gates.

On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho.

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality.

Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness.

For your name’s sake, Lord, preserve my life; in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.

Do not eat it with bread made with yeast, but for seven days eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction, because you left Egypt in haste—so that all the days of your life you may remember the time of your departure from Egypt.

Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the Lord.

But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)—

Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

“They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people.

Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.

Then Balak said to Balaam, “Come, let me take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them for me from there.”

The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal, and from there he could see the outskirts of the Israelite camp.

He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and compassionate.

Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens, you who have done great things. Who is like you, God?

Continue your love to those who know you, your righteousness to the upright in heart.

Now then, stand here, because I am going to confront you with evidence before the Lord as to all the righteous acts performed by the Lord for you and your ancestors.

There on the plains of Moab they camped along the Jordan from Beth Jeshimoth to Abel Shittim.

Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.

Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over.

Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or fight with them?

Zion will be delivered with justice, her penitent ones with righteousness.

who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods.

Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them as long as you live.
