Why do you now cry aloud— have you no king? Has your ruler perished, that pain seizes you like that of a woman in labor?

Terror will seize them, pain and anguish will grip them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame.

At this my body is racked with pain, pangs seize me, like those of a woman in labor; I am staggered by what I hear, I am bewildered by what I see.

As a pregnant woman about to give birth writhes and cries out in her pain, so were we in your presence, Lord.

The king of Babylon has heard reports about them, and his hands hang limp. Anguish has gripped him, pain like that of a woman in labor.

Listen to the cry of my people from a land far away: “Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King no longer there?” “Why have they aroused my anger with their images, with their worthless foreign idols?”

The Lord’s anointed, our very life breath, was caught in their traps. We thought that under his shadow we would live among the nations.

Then they will say, “We have no king because we did not revere the Lord. But even if we had a king, what could he do for us?”

Pains as of a woman in childbirth come to him, but he is a child without wisdom; when the time arrives, he doesn’t have the sense to come out of the womb.

For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or household gods.

Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labor bears a son, and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites.

A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.

She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.
