For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.

He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.

“Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?

It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them.

Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them.

“Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.

Then I was told, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.”

Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them,

These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter),

Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot

When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?”
