In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”

Zadok was there, too, and all the Levites who were with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. They set down the ark of God, and Abiathar offered sacrifices until all the people had finished leaving the city.

So Zadok and Abiathar took the ark of God back to Jerusalem and stayed there.

Won’t the priests Zadok and Abiathar be there with you? Tell them anything you hear in the king’s palace.

He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.

He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?

David went to Nob, to Ahimelek the priest. Ahimelek trembled when he met him, and asked, “Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?”

(Now Abiathar son of Ahimelek had brought the ephod down with him when he fled to David at Keilah.)

When David learned that Saul was plotting against him, he said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring the ephod.”
