Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

Even in laughter the heart may ache, and rejoicing may end in grief.

Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

“Laughter,” I said, “is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?”

Frustration is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart.

Like the crackling of thorns under the pot, so is the laughter of fools. This too is meaningless.

And these also stagger from wine and reel from beer: Priests and prophets stagger from beer and are befuddled with wine; they reel from beer, they stagger when seeing visions, they stumble when rendering decisions.

Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “My servants will eat, but you will go hungry; my servants will drink, but you will go thirsty; my servants will rejoice, but you will be put to shame.

Distressed and hungry, they will roam through the land; when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God.

On the right they will devour, but still be hungry; on the left they will eat, but not be satisfied. Each will feed on the flesh of their own offspring:

I will turn your religious festivals into mourning and all your singing into weeping. I will make all of you wear sackcloth and shave your heads. I will make that time like mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day.

They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble.

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

“There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out.

“But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.

Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.

They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.

Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.

You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.

Those who were full hire themselves out for food, but those who were hungry are hungry no more. She who was barren has borne seven children, but she who has had many sons pines away.
