Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed—God is our witness.

They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them. They defraud people of their homes, they rob them of their inheritance.

In you they have treated father and mother with contempt; in you they have oppressed the foreigner and mistreated the fatherless and the widow.

“Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.

As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.
