Leviticus 23:32

It is a day of sabbath rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.”

When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day.

“This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselves and not do any work—whether native-born or a foreigner residing among you—

It is a day of sabbath rest, and you must deny yourselves; it is a lasting ordinance.

“The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and present a food offering to the Lord.

You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.

Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ” And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world.
