“ ‘A priest must not defile himself by going near a dead person; however, if the dead person was his father or mother, son or daughter, brother or unmarried sister, then he may defile himself.

“Hear this, you priests! Pay attention, you Israelites! Listen, royal house! This judgment is against you: You have been a snare at Mizpah, a net spread out on Tabor.

“ ‘Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.

He must not enter a place where there is a dead body. He must not make himself unclean, even for his father or mother,

“And now, you priests, this warning is for you.

And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that my covenant with Levi may continue,” says the Lord Almighty.

“Whoever touches a human corpse will be unclean for seven days.

“This is the law that applies when a person dies in a tent: Anyone who enters the tent and anyone who is in it will be unclean for seven days,

“Anyone out in the open who touches someone who has been killed with a sword or someone who has died a natural death, or anyone who touches a human bone or a grave, will be unclean for seven days.

“Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body.

“ ‘Throughout the period of their dedication to the Lord, the Nazirite must not go near a dead body.
