The men of Ai looked back and saw the smoke of the city rising up into the sky, but they had no chance to escape in any direction; the Israelites who had been fleeing toward the wilderness had turned back against their pursuers.

He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.

But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them; their hope will become a dying gasp.”

The valiant lie plundered, they sleep their last sleep; not one of the warriors can lift his hands.

It will not be quenched night or day; its smoke will rise forever. From generation to generation it will lie desolate; no one will ever pass through it again.

As soon as he did this, the men in the ambush rose quickly from their position and rushed forward. They entered the city and captured it and quickly set it on fire.

For when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that smoke was going up from it, they turned around and attacked the men of Ai.

“When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her.

And again they shouted: “Hallelujah! The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”

The Israelites had arranged with the ambush that they should send up a great cloud of smoke from the city,

But when the column of smoke began to rise from the city, the Benjamites turned and saw the whole city going up in smoke.

Then the Israelites counterattacked, and the Benjamites were terrified, because they realized that disaster had come on them.
