That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.

You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us.

Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us and no longer go out with our armies?

The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.

“When these people, or a prophet or a priest, ask you, ‘What is the message from the Lord?’ say to them, ‘What message? I will forsake you, declares the Lord.’

Take warning, Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you and make your land desolate so no one can live in it.”

Even if they rear children, I will bereave them of every one. Woe to them when I turn away from them!

Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrongdoing. Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?

When Moses reported this to all the Israelites, they mourned bitterly.

Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,

for the Amalekites and the Canaanites will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you and you will fall by the sword.”

Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.

Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.

But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it.

Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.

In his anger against Israel the Lord gave them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.

When the angel of the Lord had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud,

Saul therefore said, “Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed today.
