Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.

(Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He had set it on fire. He killed its Canaanite inhabitants and then gave it as a wedding gift to his daughter, Solomon’s wife.

However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor but did not drive them out completely.

Solomon conscripted the descendants of all these peoples remaining in the land—whom the Israelites could not exterminate—to serve as slave labor, as it is to this day.

Judah could not dislodge the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the people of Judah.

Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.

It also included all the towns and their villages that were set aside for the Ephraimites within the inheritance of the Manassites.

Yet the Manassites were not able to occupy these towns, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that region.

Here is the account of the forced labor King Solomon conscripted to build the Lord’s temple, his own palace, the terraces, the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, Megiddo and Gezer.

Solomon conscripted the descendants of all these people remaining in the land—whom the Israelites had not destroyed—to serve as slave labor, as it is to this day.
