His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.

Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.

“I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mere mortals, human beings who are but grass,

“Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have taken my instruction to heart: Do not fear the reproach of mere mortals or be terrified by their insults.

“Whom have you so dreaded and feared that you have not been true to me, and have neither remembered me nor taken this to heart? Is it not because I have long been silent that you do not fear me?

Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.

They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.

Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.

They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents.

But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.”

To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.

Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.

His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
