At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.

For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered.

This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”

On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”

From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”

And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.

These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.
