and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”

Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.

Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

This is what the Lord says: Be careful not to carry a load on the Sabbath day or bring it through the gates of Jerusalem.

Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”

Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him.

Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath?

Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.

But if you do not obey me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying any load as you come through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle an unquenchable fire in the gates of Jerusalem that will consume her fortresses.’ ”

“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,

and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”

Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.

But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”

The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.
