“I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning: ‘You disciplined me like an unruly calf, and I have been disciplined. Restore me, and I will return, because you are the Lord my God.

“Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.

The Lord has chastened me severely, but he has not given me over to death.

Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.

I know, Lord, that your laws are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.

My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.

Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.

Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.

Restore us, God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.

Restore us again, God our Savior, and put away your displeasure toward us.

Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord, the one you teach from your law;

A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the backs of fools!

Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.

My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke,

Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted.

Your children have fainted; they lie at every street corner, like antelope caught in a net. They are filled with the wrath of the Lord, with the rebuke of your God.

He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

But you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us or Israel acknowledge us; you, Lord, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name.

But the people have not returned to him who struck them, nor have they sought the Lord Almighty.

Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.

“In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravenous lion.

Let us lie down in our shame, and let our disgrace cover us. We have sinned against the Lord our God, both we and our ancestors; from our youth till this day we have not obeyed the Lord our God.”

There will be a day when watchmen cry out on the hills of Ephraim, ‘Come, let us go up to Zion, to the Lord our God.’ ”

They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel’s father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son.

Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain; you crushed them, but they refused correction. They made their faces harder than stone and refused to repent.

Restore us to yourself, Lord, that we may return; renew our days as of old

There you will remember your conduct and all the actions by which you have defiled yourselves, and you will loathe yourselves for all the evil you have done.

Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth.

Ephraim is a trained heifer that loves to thresh; so I will put a yoke on her fair neck. I will drive Ephraim, Judah must plow, and Jacob must break up the ground.

The Israelites are stubborn, like a stubborn heifer. How then can the Lord pasture them like lambs in a meadow?

Then I will return to my lair until they have borne their guilt and seek my face— in their misery they will earnestly seek me.”

When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

She obeys no one, she accepts no correction. She does not trust in the Lord, she does not draw near to her God.

Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honored his name.

He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”

On the west will be the divisions of the camp of Ephraim under their standard. The leader of the people of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud.

And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.
