But if you do not obey these commands, declares the Lord, I swear by myself that this palace will become a ruin.’ ”

“But if you turn away and forsake the decrees and commands I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them,

This temple will become a heap of rubble. All who pass by will be appalled and say, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’

People will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who brought them out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—that is why he brought all this disaster on them.’ ”

So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”

but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.” For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

“I will forsake my house, abandon my inheritance; I will give the one I love into the hands of her enemies.

But if you do not obey me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying any load as you come through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle an unquenchable fire in the gates of Jerusalem that will consume her fortresses.’ ”

Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: If you do not listen to me and follow my law, which I have set before you,

The Babylonians set fire to the royal palace and the houses of the people and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

But hear the word of the Lord, all you Jews living in Egypt: ‘I swear by my great name,’ says the Lord, ‘that no one from Judah living anywhere in Egypt will ever again invoke my name or swear, “As surely as the Sovereign Lord lives.”

The Sovereign Lord has sworn by himself—the Lord God Almighty declares: “I abhor the pride of Jacob and detest his fortresses; I will deliver up the city and everything in it.”

Therefore because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets.

Look, your house is left to you desolate.

And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?

When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,

Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath.
