I will hurl you and the mother who gave you birth into another country, where neither of you was born, and there you both will die.

Nebuchadnezzar took Jehoiachin captive to Babylon. He also took from Jerusalem to Babylon the king’s mother, his wives, his officials and the prominent people of the land.

Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother’s name was Nehushta daughter of Elnathan; she was from Jerusalem.

In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the year Awel-Marduk became king of Babylon, he released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison. He did this on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month.

So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king’s table.

Day by day the king gave Jehoiachin a regular allowance as long as he lived.

“Beware, the Lord is about to take firm hold of you and hurl you away, you mighty man.

For this is what the Lord says: “At this time I will hurl out those who live in this land; I will bring distress on them so that they may be captured.”

Say to the king and to the queen mother, “Come down from your thrones, for your glorious crowns will fall from your heads.”

So I will throw you out of this land into a land neither you nor your ancestors have known, and there you will serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.’

You will never come back to the land you long to return to.”

I will also bring back to this place Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and all the other exiles from Judah who went to Babylon,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’ ”

(This was after King Jehoiachin and the queen mother, the court officials and the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the skilled workers and the artisans had gone into exile from Jerusalem.)

None of the remnant of Judah who have gone to live in Egypt will escape or survive to return to the land of Judah, to which they long to return and live; none will return except a few fugitives.”
