Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

We have heard of Moab’s pride— how great is her arrogance!— of her conceit, her pride and her insolence; but her boasts are empty.

The Lord Almighty planned it, to bring down her pride in all her splendor and to humble all who are renowned on the earth.

Then the word of the Lord came to me:

Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin and an object of horror and scorn, a curse—as they are today;

“We have heard of Moab’s pride— how great is her arrogance!— of her insolence, her pride, her conceit and the haughtiness of her heart.

They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

You would not even mention your sister Sodom in the day of your pride,

I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.

The Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and have ruined their vines.

On that day you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame for all the wrongs you have done to me, because I will remove from you your arrogant boasters. Never again will you be haughty on my holy hill.

“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
