You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

You will plant but not harvest; you will press olives but not use the oil, you will crush grapes but not drink the wine.

You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little, because locusts will devour it.

Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.

then I will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your sight and sap your strength. You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it.

Has not the Lord Almighty determined that the people’s labor is only fuel for the fire, that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing?

I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert; all its towns lay in ruins before the Lord, before his fierce anger.

What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!

Your strength will be spent in vain, because your soil will not yield its crops, nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit.

Friend deceives friend, and no one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning.

“I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”

He gave his people over to the sword; he was furious with his inheritance.

“They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. The stalk has no head; it will produce no flour. Were it to yield grain, foreigners would swallow it up.

“You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house.
