How often are they like straw before the wind, like chaff swept away by a gale?

Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the Lord driving them away;

I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless.

Therefore strong peoples will honor you; cities of ruthless nations will revere you.

You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless is like a storm driving against a wall

and like the heat of the desert. You silence the uproar of foreigners; as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud, so the song of the ruthless is stilled.

The ruthless will vanish, the mockers will disappear, and all who have an eye for evil will be cut down—

this sin will become for you like a high wall, cracked and bulging, that collapses suddenly, in an instant.

“All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish.

“See, I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them, and reduce the hills to chaff.

You will winnow them, the wind will pick them up, and a gale will blow them away. But you will rejoice in the Lord and glory in the Holy One of Israel.

Disaster will come upon you, and you will not know how to conjure it away. A calamity will fall upon you that you cannot ward off with a ransom; a catastrophe you cannot foresee will suddenly come upon you.

I foretold the former things long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them known; then suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.

With a blinding flash he destroys the stronghold and brings the fortified city to ruin.

While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
