We have heard of Moab’s pride— how great is her arrogance!— of her conceit, her pride and her insolence; but her boasts are empty.

The proud and arrogant person—“Mocker” is his name— behaves with insolent fury.

A prophecy against Moab: Ar in Moab is ruined, destroyed in a night! Kir in Moab is ruined, destroyed in a night!

The eyes of the arrogant will be humbled and human pride brought low; the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.

The hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain; but Moab will be trampled in their land as straw is trampled down in the manure.

They will stretch out their hands in it, as swimmers stretch out their hands to swim. God will bring down their pride despite the cleverness of their hands.

You boast, “We have entered into a covenant with death, with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie our refuge and falsehood our hiding place.”

Your covenant with death will be annulled; your agreement with the realm of the dead will not stand. When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by, you will be beaten down by it.

who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools of diviners, who overthrows the learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense,

“How can you say, ‘We are warriors, men valiant in battle’?

“Make her drunk, for she has defied the Lord. Let Moab wallow in her vomit; let her be an object of ridicule.

Moab will be destroyed as a nation because she defied the Lord.

A sword against her false prophets! They will become fools. A sword against her warriors! They will be filled with terror.

This is what the Lord says: “For three sins of Moab, even for four, I will not relent. Because he burned to ashes the bones of Edom’s king,

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
