After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them.

But those who turn to crooked ways the Lord will banish with the evildoers. Peace be on Israel.

The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful; they fail to act wisely or do good.

The righteous eat to their hearts’ content, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry.

Recently you repented and did what is right in my sight: Each of you proclaimed freedom to your own people. You even made a covenant before me in the house that bears my Name.

Who is wise enough to understand this? Who has been instructed by the Lord and can explain it? Why has the land been ruined and laid waste like a desert that no one can cross?

“But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die.

In you are slanderers who are bent on shedding blood; in you are those who eat at the mountain shrines and commit lewd acts.

“I will not punish your daughters when they turn to prostitution, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery, because the men themselves consort with harlots and sacrifice with shrine prostitutes— a people without understanding will come to ruin!

They are all adulterers, burning like an oven whose fire the baker need not stir from the kneading of the dough till it rises.

When I cut off your supply of bread, ten women will be able to bake your bread in one oven, and they will dole out the bread by weight. You will eat, but you will not be satisfied.

You will eat but not be satisfied; your stomach will still be empty. You will store up but save nothing, because what you save I will give to the sword.

those who turn back from following the Lord and neither seek the Lord nor inquire of him.”

You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”
