“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.

“They have greatly oppressed me from my youth,” let Israel say;

‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.

Then say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son,

and I told you, “Let my son go, so he may worship me.” But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son.’ ”

Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.

“I will forsake my house, abandon my inheritance; I will give the one I love into the hands of her enemies.

“Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem: “This is what the Lord says: “ ‘I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the wilderness, through a land not sown.

In all your detestable practices and your prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, kicking about in your blood.

“ ‘Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, “Live!”

So will it happen to you, Bethel, because your wickedness is great. When that day dawns, the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.

The Lord used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt, by a prophet he cared for him.

“I have been the Lord your God ever since you came out of Egypt; I will make you live in tents again, as in the days of your appointed festivals.

“But I have been the Lord your God ever since you came out of Egypt. You shall acknowledge no God but me, no Savior except me.

There I will give her back her vineyards, and will make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. There she will respond as in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt.

“I have loved you,” says the Lord. “But you ask, ‘How have you loved us?’ “Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet I have loved Jacob,

where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

Surely it is you who love the people; all the holy ones are in your hand. At your feet they all bow down, and from you receive instruction,

The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.
