Hosea 10:1

New International Version

Israel was a spreading vine; he brought forth fruit for himself. As his fruit increased, he built more altars; as his land prospered, he adorned his sacred stones.

“Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings, these have become altars for sinning.

Is Gilead wicked? Its people are worthless! Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal? Their altars will be like piles of stones on a plowed field.

For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.

Where then are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble! For you, Judah, have as many gods as you have towns.

“ ‘Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.

They also set up for themselves high places, sacred stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading tree.

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.

The Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and have ruined their vines.

When I fed them, they were satisfied; when they were satisfied, they became proud; then they forgot me.

Now they sin more and more; they make idols for themselves from their silver, cleverly fashioned images, all of them the work of craftsmen. It is said of these people, “They offer human sacrifices! They kiss calf-idols!”

Ephraim boasts, “I am very rich; I have become wealthy. With all my wealth they will not find in me any iniquity or sin.”

They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval. With their silver and gold they make idols for themselves to their own destruction.

She has not acknowledged that I was the one who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil, who lavished on her the silver and gold— which they used for Baal.

For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or household gods.

The more priests there were, the more they sinned against me; they exchanged their glorious God for something disgraceful.

even though he thrives among his brothers. An east wind from the Lord will come, blowing in from the desert; his spring will fail and his well dry up. His storehouse will be plundered of all its treasures.

You, Judah, have as many gods as you have towns; and the altars you have set up to burn incense to that shameful god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’

The Lord Almighty, who planted you, has decreed disaster for you, because the people of both Israel and Judah have done evil and aroused my anger by burning incense to Baal.

So now I will expose her lewdness before the eyes of her lovers; no one will take her out of my hands.
