Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.

He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence and continually arouse my anger? Look at them putting the branch to their nose!

Because you have plundered many nations, the peoples who are left will plunder you. For you have shed human blood; you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.

No longer will violence be heard in your land, nor ruin or destruction within your borders, but you will call your walls Salvation and your gates Praise.

Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.

The violence you have done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, and your destruction of animals will terrify you. For you have shed human blood; you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save?

As a well pours out its water, so she pours out her wickedness. Violence and destruction resound in her; her sickness and wounds are ever before me.

May slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down the violent.

Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words, for I see violence and strife in the city.

The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion.

Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.

He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.”

Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before God when you heard what he spoke against this place and its people, and because you humbled yourself before me and tore your robes and wept in my presence, I have heard you, declares the Lord.

The Lord then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.

Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt.

For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster will fall on you because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord and arouse his anger by what your hands have made.”

But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their ancestors, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.
