So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little more food.”

If you will send our brother along with us, we will go down and buy food for you.

But if you will not send him, we will not go down, because the man said to us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’ ”

But you told your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’

But the king said, “He must go to his own house; he must not see my face.” So Absalom went to his own house and did not see the face of the king.

Absalom lived two years in Jerusalem without seeing the king’s face.

Absalom said to Joab, “Look, I sent word to you and said, ‘Come here so I can send you to the king to ask, “Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there!” ’ Now then, I want to see the king’s face, and if I am guilty of anything, let him put me to death.”

“Good,” said David. “I will make an agreement with you. But I demand one thing of you: Do not come into my presence unless you bring Michal daughter of Saul when you come to see me.”

“Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom will ever see me again.

What grieved them most was his statement that they would never see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.

I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’
