Genesis 37:22

“Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said.

So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing—

Reuben replied, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood.”

But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.

It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them.

You must certainly put them to death. Your hand must be the first in putting them to death, and then the hands of all the people.
