Then you shall declare before the Lord your God: “My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down into Egypt with a few people and lived there and became a great nation, powerful and numerous.

Your ancestors who went down into Egypt were seventy in all, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.

With the two sons who had been born to Joseph in Egypt, the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy in all.

Moreover, Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him he was running away.

I will provide for you there, because five years of famine are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute.’

The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.

But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites

but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.

The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all; Joseph was already in Egypt.

Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.

This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.

Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while, because the famine is severe in Canaan and your servants’ flocks have no pasture. So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”

The Lord your God has increased your numbers so that today you are as numerous as the stars in the sky.

The priest shall take the basket from your hands and set it down in front of the altar of the Lord your God.

The Lord used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt, by a prophet he cared for him.
