Can a corrupt throne be allied with you— a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?

When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong.

You said, ‘I am forever— the eternal queen!’ But you did not consider these things or reflect on what might happen.

“Come,” each one cries, “let me get wine! Let us drink our fill of beer! And tomorrow will be like today, or even far better.”

Those who once ate delicacies are destitute in the streets. Those brought up in royal purple now lie on ash heaps.

“Son of man, what is this proverb you have in the land of Israel: ‘The days go by and every vision comes to nothing’?

“Son of man, the Israelites are saying, ‘The vision he sees is for many years from now, and he prophesies about the distant future.’

“The noise of a carefree crowd was around her; drunkards were brought from the desert along with men from the rabble, and they put bracelets on the wrists of the woman and her sister and beautiful crowns on their heads.

“They do not know how to do right,” declares the Lord, “who store up in their fortresses what they have plundered and looted.”

Proclaim to the fortresses of Ashdod and to the fortresses of Egypt: “Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria; see the great unrest within her and the oppression among her people.”

For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins. There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts.

Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! Why do you long for the day of the Lord? That day will be darkness, not light.

Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness—

All the sinners among my people will die by the sword, all those who say, ‘Disaster will not overtake or meet us.’

Your rich people are violent; your inhabitants are liars and their tongues speak deceitfully.

But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’

While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”

In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’ “Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off.
