For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins. There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts.

There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in court and detest the one who tells the truth.

Your rulers are rebels, partners with thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow’s case does not come before them.

“So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,” says the Lord Almighty.

But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.

You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.

Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.

Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him—

Both hands are skilled in doing evil; the ruler demands gifts, the judge accepts bribes, the powerful dictate what they desire— they all conspire together.

Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the Lord’s support and say, “Is not the Lord among us? No disaster will come upon us.”

Even the bravest warriors will flee naked on that day,” declares the Lord.

To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land,

For they have done outrageous things in Israel; they have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and in my name they have uttered lies—which I did not authorize. I know it and am a witness to it,” declares the Lord.

“And I, because of what they have planned and done, am about to come and gather the people of all nations and languages, and they will come and see my glory.

Both of these will overtake you in a moment, on a single day: loss of children and widowhood. They will come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries and all your potent spells.

Those who walk righteously and speak what is right, who reject gain from extortion and keep their hands from accepting bribes, who stop their ears against plots of murder and shut their eyes against contemplating evil—

those who with a word make someone out to be guilty, who ensnare the defender in court and with false testimony deprive the innocent of justice.

to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless.

who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice to the innocent.

Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court,

if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, knowing that I had influence in court,

Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there just as the guardian-redeemer he had mentioned came along. Boaz said, “Come over here, my friend, and sit down.” So he went over and sat down.

And when many disasters and calamities come on them, this song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants. I know what they are disposed to do, even before I bring them into the land I promised them on oath.”

Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town the Lord your God is giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly.

Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.

A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it; they think success will come at every turn.

Because you disheartened the righteous with your lies, when I had brought them no grief, and because you encouraged the wicked not to turn from their evil ways and so save their lives,

I know all about Ephraim; Israel is not hidden from me. Ephraim, you have now turned to prostitution; Israel is corrupt.

I will destroy her ruler and kill all her officials with him,” says the Lord.

There are those who turn justice into bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground.

Hear this, you who trample the needy and do away with the poor of the land,

and do not show favoritism to a poor person in a lawsuit.

“Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits.

For he has oppressed the poor and left them destitute; he has seized houses he did not build.
