Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing.

For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

“So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it.

For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.

“Aren’t you the Egyptian who started a revolt and led four thousand terrorists out into the wilderness some time ago?”

As for those who were held in high esteem—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism—they added nothing to my message.

If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves.

For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error.

Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.

These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.

Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns.

The name written on her forehead was a mystery: babylon the great the mother of prostitutes and of the abominations of the earth.
