At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them.
Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.
But if we say, ‘Of human origin’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”
“But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”
But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.
The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.

And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.
After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened.
No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.
But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they went back and reported,
On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.
Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.”
