Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people,

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.

They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.

They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.

as the high priest and all the Council can themselves testify. I even obtained letters from them to their associates in Damascus, and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.

“I too was convinced that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

They replied, “We have not received any letters from Judea concerning you, and none of our people who have come from there has reported or said anything bad about you.

They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’

God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel:

None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away.

They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.

If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!

Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.
