At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them.

At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people. When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles.

Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.

They replied, “We have not received any letters from Judea concerning you, and none of our people who have come from there has reported or said anything bad about you.

“On one of these journeys I was going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests.

And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the Lord’s people in prison, and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.

“Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense.”

“Fellow children of Abraham and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent.

And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”

The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem.

In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty)

“Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.

“Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders.

Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin and said, “My brothers, I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience to this day.”

Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, descended from Pharisees. I stand on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead.”

Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have them punished, and I tried to force them to blaspheme. I was so obsessed with persecuting them that I even hunted them down in foreign cities.

Three days later he called together the local Jewish leaders. When they had assembled, Paul said to them: “My brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.

For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.

as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.
