Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.”

Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.

“Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”

Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.

For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, “Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!” So none of the troops tasted food.
