For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”

I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail.

Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you.

Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”

I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands.

Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.

“I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant!”

I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered.

Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ ”

Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.

He stripped off his garments, and he too prophesied in Samuel’s presence. He lay naked all that day and all that night. This is why people say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.

Lord, where is your former great love, which in your faithfulness you swore to David?

But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!”
