David replied, “What does this have to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? What right do you have to interfere? Should anyone be put to death in Israel today? Don’t I know that today I am king over Israel?”

But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’ ”

Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him, “What are you doing?”

If he snatches away, who can stop him? Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

Furthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the Lord? The Lord himself told me to march against this country and destroy it.’ ”

“Now you yourself know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me—what he did to the two commanders of Israel’s armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. He killed them, shedding their blood in peacetime as if in battle, and with that blood he stained the belt around his waist and the sandals on his feet.

“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”

She said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?”

I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this.

Now let my lord the king listen to his servant’s words. If the Lord has incited you against me, then may he accept an offering. If, however, people have done it, may they be cursed before the Lord! They have driven me today from my share in the Lord’s inheritance and have said, ‘Go, serve other gods.’

So the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king promised him on oath.

Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it?
