When David learned that Saul was plotting against him, he said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring the ephod.”

To Abiathar the priest the king said, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth. You deserve to die, but I will not put you to death now, because you carried the ark of the Sovereign Lord before my father David and shared all my father’s hardships.”

‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or household gods.

He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

But they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country,

but Saul learned of their plan. Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him.

So they inquired further of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?” And the Lord said, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies.”

Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God.” (At that time it was with the Israelites.)

But one son of Ahimelek son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled to join David.

David said, “Lord, God of Israel, your servant has heard definitely that Saul plans to come to Keilah and destroy the town on account of me.

(Now Abiathar son of Ahimelek had brought the ephod down with him when he fled to David at Keilah.)

And Saul called up all his forces for battle, to go down to Keilah to besiege David and his men.

Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelek, “Bring me the ephod.” Abiathar brought it to him,
