“But I did obey the Lord,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king.

When Samuel reached him, Saul said, “The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord’s instructions.”

Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”

“Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?

“Do you think this is just? You say, ‘I am in the right, not God.’

“Job says, ‘I am innocent, but God denies me justice.

‘I am pure, I have done no wrong; I am clean and free from sin.

He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword.

Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’ ”

Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the Lord has done this to you today.
