Then Ezra left the house of God. He went to Jehohanan’s room. Jehohanan was the son of Eliashib. While Ezra was there, he didn’t eat any food. He didn’t drink any water. That’s because he was filled with sadness. He mourned because the people weren’t faithful to the Lord’s commands. Those people were the ones who had returned from the land of Babylon.

Suppose we don’t obey your commands again. And suppose we continue to marry people who commit sins that you hate. If we do, you will be so angry with us that you will destroy us. You won’t leave us even a few people. You won’t leave anyone alive.

When I heard that, I tore my inner robe and my coat. I pulled hair from my head and beard. I was so shocked I sat down.

So I gave them a warning. I cursed them. I beat up some of them. I pulled their hair out. I had them make a promise in God’s name. I said, “You must promise not to give your daughters to be married to their sons. You must promise not to let their daughters marry your sons. And you must not marry their daughters either.

I heard them when they cried out. And I was very angry when I heard what they were saying.

Streams of tears flow from my eyes, because people don’t obey your law.

I get very angry when I see people who aren’t faithful to you. They don’t obey your word.

“What if his sons turn away from my laws and do not follow them?

If you don’t listen, I will weep in secret. Because you are so proud, I will weep bitterly. Tears will flow from my eyes. The Lord’s flock will be taken away as prisoners.

Daniel, who was also called Belteshazzar, was very bewildered for a while. His thoughts terrified him. So the king said, “Belteshazzar, don’t let the dream or its meaning make you afraid.” Belteshazzar answered, “My master, I wish the dream were about your enemies! I wish its meaning had to do with them!

I listened and my heart pounded. My lips trembled at the sound. My bones seemed to rot. And my legs shook. But I will be patient. I’ll wait for the day of trouble to come on Babylon. It’s the nation that is attacking us.

I’m afraid that when I come again my God will put me to shame in front of you. Then I will be sad about many who sinned earlier and have not turned away from it. They have not turned away from uncleanness, sexual sins and wild living. They have done all those things.

I have told you these things many times before. Now I tell you again with tears in my eyes. Many people live like enemies of the cross of Christ.
