Jabez cried out to the God of Israel. He said, “I wish you would bless me. I wish you would give me more territory. Let your power protect me. Keep me from harm. Then I won’t have any pain.” God gave him what he asked for.

Your covenant laws are your gift to me forever. They fill my heart with joy.

Take good care of me, and I will be saved. I will always honor your orders.

I have chosen to be faithful to you. I put my trust in your laws.

Teach me to live as you command, because that makes me very happy.

I really want to follow your rules. Keep me alive, because you do what is right.

Save me, because I belong to you. I’ve tried to obey your rules.

Even if that person trips, he won’t fall. The Lord’s hand takes good care of him.

You hated knowledge. You didn’t choose to have respect for the Lord.

Or you can serve the gods of the Amorites. After all, you are living in their land. But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”

Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses against yourselves. You have said that you have chosen to serve the Lord.” “Yes. We are witnesses,” they replied.
