“I haven’t made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have turned away from the Lord’s commands. You have followed gods that are named Baal.

But the king had found out about Haman’s evil plan. So the king had sent out written orders. He had ordered that Haman’s evil plan against the Jews should happen to him instead. The king also commanded that poles be stuck through the dead bodies of Haman and his sons. Then they should be set up where everyone could see them.

Their feet take them into a net. They wander right into it.

There are more troubles all around me than I can count. My sins have caught up with me, and I can’t see any longer. My sins are more than the hairs of my head. I have lost all hope.

The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug. Their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.

Sinful people go down to the place of the dead. So do all the nations that forget God.

Those who hide and wait will spill their own blood. They will be caught in their own trap.

Those who do what is right are guided by their honest lives. But those who aren’t faithful are destroyed by their lies.

The ways of honest people are made straight because they do what is right. But those who do what is wrong are brought down by their own sins.

Godly people are saved by doing what is right. But those who aren’t faithful are trapped by evil longings.

Many good things come from what people say. And the work of their hands rewards them.

When trouble comes, sinners are brought down. But godly people seek safety in God even as they die.

The words of foolish people drag them down. They are trapped by what they say.

Don’t say, “But we didn’t know anything about this.” Doesn’t the God who knows what you are thinking see it? Doesn’t the God who guards your life know it? He will pay back everyone for what they have done.

Whoever digs a pit will fall into it. If someone rolls a big stone, it will roll back on them.

A woman who hunts a man down is more painful than death. Her heart is like a trap. Her hands are like chains. A man who pleases God will try to get away from her. But she will trap a sinner.

You will be punished because you have sinned. You will be corrected for turning away from me. I am the Lord your God. If you desert me, bad things will happen to you. If you do not respect me, you will suffer bitterly. I want you to understand that,” announces the Lord who rules over all.

“My sins have been made into a heavy yoke. They were woven together by his hands. They have been placed on my neck. The Lord has taken away my strength. He has handed me over to my enemies. I can’t win the battle over them.

“The day of the Lord is near for all the nations. Others will do to you what you have done to them. You will be paid back for what you have done.

“But what if you fail to do your duty? Then you will be sinning against the Lord. And you may be sure that your sin will be discovered. It will be brought out into the open.

All of you should honor marriage. You should keep the marriage bed pure. God will judge the person who commits adultery. He will judge everyone who commits sexual sins.

Then the Israelites turned around and attacked them. The men of Benjamin were terrified. They realized they were going to be destroyed.

God also made the people of Shechem pay for all the evil things they had done. The curse of Jotham came down on them. He was the son of Jerub-Baal.
